Former US President Barack Obama advocated respecting access to immigration reform and emphasized the importance of the policy of the deferred event for children’s arrivals (DACA).
Obama’s statement comes when US President Donald Trump asked officials of immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) to launch “efforts to detain and deport illegal aliens” in democratic cities.
In a post on the Social Media Platform X Obama wrote: “Thirteen years ago my administration acted to protect young people who were American every way, but one: on paper.”
He added: “Daca was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. And it is an example that is worth remembering today when families with a similar background want to live, work and support their communities, are demonized and considered enemies.”
Obama called for the recognition of humanity and the dignity of people and tried to repair the immigration system.
“We can repair our broken immigration system and at the same time still realize our common humanity and treat each other with dignity and respect. In fact, this is the only way we will ever,” he said.
What is Daca?
Delayed measures for incoming childhood (DACA) is an immigration policy established by the Obama administration in 2012. It allows some undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children to avoid temporarily and secure work permits.
The immigrants who entered the US 16 years ago stayed continuously from June 15, 2007, qualified with specific educational or military requirements and were not convicted of certain crimes, are eligible to apply for DAC. In particular, this policy is not a permanent measure; All recipients are obliged to restore their status every two years.
Trump’s intervention against immigration
After entering the White House for the second time in January, Trump launched several measures to target immigrants, especially illegal immigrants. Trump’s last order on the expansion of ice raids comes after massive protests broke out in Los Angeles and other capital cities against his immigration policy.
In his contribution to his Social Account of Truth, he urged officials to “expand their efforts to detain and deport illegal extraterrestrials in the largest American cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, where millions of illegal extraterrestrials are located.”
“These and other such cities are the core of the democratic power center where they use illegal extraterrestrials to expand their voter base, cheating in the elections and growth of the welfare state, robbing good paying and benefits from hardworking American citizens,” he added.
Previously, Stephen Miller, representative of the Chief of the White House Staff and the main architect of Trump immigration policy, said ICE officers intend to target at least 3,000 arrests per day, compared to approximately 650 a day during the initial five months of the second term.
