Two-time FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay play cricket at Eden Gardens (Screengrabs) The Uruguay football team was scouting Kolkata ahead of an international friendly against India on 6 October.The two-time FIFA world champions visited some of the city’s famous landmarks and even tried their hand at cricket at the iconic Eden Gardens.The players enjoyed a relaxed cricket session at the famous stadium, which also has a connection with Uruguayan football history.The team played at Eden Gardens during the inaugural Nehru Cup in 1982 and won the tournament.More than four decades later, Uruguay are back in Kolkata, this time for a football friendly against India.This time the squad visited a famous cricket stadium and tried cricket. The likes of Lucas Torreira and Ronald Araújo have been seen picking up bats and balls as they get a taste of the game.Their official social media account posted a clip showing the players sightseeing and enjoying their time in the Indian city.Watch:The unit also visited the Victoria Memorial and St Paul’s Cathedral.
India’s next match against Uruguay
Uruguay will now focus on their October 6 match against India at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.The South American team is ranked 20th in the FIFA rankings and is coached by former Manchester United and Atlético Madrid forward Diego Forlán.Forlán also has links to Indian football, having played for Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League in 2016.The match will be India’s second major match in Kolkata in three days. The Blue Tigers previously faced Brazil on October 3 and suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat.
