WATCH: Love at 1,454 feet. The couple’s daring proposal for the Empire State Building ends in an arrest | Today’s news

Two people were arrested Wednesday after climbing to the top of the Empire State Building’s 1,454-foot (443-meter) antenna, unfurling a peace flag and appearing to stage a marriage proposal before descending.

Dressed in black and wearing masks, they balanced on a narrow ledge high above midtown Manhattan with no safety harnesses visible. They put up a banner that read, “When the power of love defeats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

News helicopter footage showed the pair kissing near the top of the antenna before beginning their descent shortly after 12:30 p.m.

As they descended the metal grate to a wider platform, one of the climbers appeared to kneel down and give the other what appeared to be an engagement ring. The pair hugged, kissed again and took a selfie, with one appearing to show off a ring.

The NYPD took both individuals into custody shortly after 1 p.m. Authorities said there were no injuries, but the climbers’ identities were not immediately released.

Officials have not disclosed how the pair managed to gain access to the antenna, which is located high above the public observation decks of the 102-story landmark.

The spectacle drew crowds of onlookers down as helicopters circled overhead.

Authorities are still investigating Wednesday’s high-risk stunt and have not yet announced whether the climbers will face criminal charges.
