Mbappe, who spent much of the match on the receiving end of tough challenges, scored the only goal from the penalty spot after a VAR review upheld a foul on Desire Doue. After the final whistle, the tension spilled over during the traditional handshake line. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill tried to shake Mbappe’s hand, but the France captain ignored the gesture and turned to celebrate with the fans. An angry Gill then threw the ball at Mbappe and hit him in the back, although the France star chose not to react.Watch:“I tried to shake his hand, but because he wasn’t paying any attention to me, I lost my temper,” Gill admitted afterwards. “But that was it. I calmed down after that.”Mbappe’s winning goal was his seventh of the tournament, putting him back on top of the Golden Boot rankings. His World Cup career also reached 19 goals, just one short of Lionel Messi’s all-time tournament record.Mbappe reflected on the heated match and insisted France were prepared for Paraguay’s aggressive approach.“We knew what kind of game it was going to be,” said Mbappe. “We can get our hands dirty. We know how to play dirty football. They probably thought we’d show up in tuxedos, but we were ready.”The win sends France into the quarter-finals of their fourth straight World Cup, where they will face Morocco, a team they beat in the semi-finals of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
