Watch: Harry Kane gets his voice back after viral World Cup interview
England captain Harry Kane has finally found his vocal chords again and laughed off the viral internet storm sparked by his shrill and screeching sideline chat after The Three Lions’ epic 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico. Standing in front of the BBC cameras just hours after the match in Mexico City, a fully recovered Kane was able to speak normally and responded to the massive reaction on social media with a beaming smile.
“Thankfully I have my voice back,” laughed Kane.
“After a long conversation, I was probably killed at home with all my friends. After that, it doesn’t bother me anymore, it was worth it.”
The striker’s relief comes after what was immediate called it one of the funniest post-match interviews in football history. Immediately after the final whistle at the raucous Estadio Azteca, Kane went completely into the flash-chat zone, unable to speak in his normal register. After spending the immediate aftermath of the game screaming on the field and passionately belting out the team’s unofficial tournament anthem with traveling fans, his vocal cords were left completely torn.
While attempting to answer questions from the broadcaster, the Bayern Munich forward’s voice broke into an extremely strained, high-pitched wheeze that sent the BBC studio panel and fans online into absolute stitches.
Kane laughed during the opening interview and admitted, “My voice is gone… I was just singing there, I can’t really talk. Everything was against us, we found a way. I can’t even talk.”
The clip exploded across social media platforms, with fans mercilessly comparing the England captain to Mickey Mouse, Marge Simpson and Kermit the Frog.
While his group of friends back home may not let him live through a high-stakes interview anytime soon, Kane insisted the vocal sacrifice was a small price to pay for what he described as one of the biggest wins the national team has ever won.
It was a night of pure drama that more than justified the exuberant celebrations. After Jude Bellingham’s lightning double put Thomas Tuchel’s side 2-0 up, the game turned into a chaotic battle when defender Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half. Kane stepped up to slot home the decisive penalty to make it 3-1 before conceding a penalty at the other end that allowed Mexico to get back into the tie.
Down to 10 men and 11 minutes of agonizing stoppage time, England dug deep to survive the hostile atmosphere and book their place in the quarter-finals.
With his voice fully restored and the banter from his teammates safely under control, Kane can now focus on the next big challenge: the much-anticipated quarter-final clash against Erling Haaland’s Norway in Miami.
