The incident unfolded off the final ball of the opening end of MI New York’s chase. De Kock moved the ball back to Maxwell and casually faded out of his crease as he backed up. Captain Washington Freedom immediately saw the opportunity.Showing exceptional awareness and quick reflexes, Maxwell picked up the ball and in one fluid movement flicked his underarm between the legs of the non-striker’s end. The ball hit the stumps and De Kock was stuck far below his ground. The South African batsman at the wicket could only watch in disbelief as he got just one run off one ball. The layoff left MI New York in early trouble and gave the Washington Freedom the perfect start in their huge defense.

Pollard’s historic century ends in defeat

Despite a historic century and Kieron Pollard’s record-breaking feat as T20 cricket’s highest run-scorer, MI New York suffered a 30-run defeat by Washington Freedom in MLC 2026.Washington Freedom posted a daunting 245/5, powered by Mitchell Owen’s sensational 155 off 68 balls, while Steve Smith and Mark Chapman provided valuable support. In response, MI New York’s chase faltered early as Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran and Monank Patel fell cheaply to leave the side at 34/3.Pollard fought back with a brilliant 100 off 56 balls to surpass Chris Gayle’s previous T20 run record during the innings. However, contributions from Corbin Bosch (35) and Romario Shepherd (26) were not enough as MI New York finished on 215/6. Glenn Maxwell’s all-round display, including 2/37 with the ball, helped Washington Freedom secure a memorable win.
