The five -time world champion Magnus Carlsen could not hide his smile at the Norwegian chess 2025 when the Indian Grand Master D. Gukesh was asked to share his favorite moment of the tournament.
When the Indian Grand Master D. Gukesh was asked to name the moment he would remember most of the tournament, he did not hesitate, “Magnus beating.” The answer was laughing and real amusement from the room when Magnus Carlsen, sitting in the audience, tried to hide his smile.
When the same question was asked by Carlsen, he repeated Gukesh’s sentiment. “I think it’s the same,” he said. “I think there were a lot of great moments in the tournament, but it definitely stands out.”
The first classic victory of Gukesh over world no.
Despite the disturbance, Carlsen continued his claim to the Norwegian chess title After the seventh time in his career, thanks to the dramatic final return. His draw against Arjun Erigaisi in a classic game was enough to express both Gukesh and Fabiano Caruana and the seal of another triumph of the tournament on home.
Gukesh went to the last round and Carlsen watched only half a point. For 34 movements, Carlsen’s game against Erigaisi seemed uncertain. Tactical Indian’s young Indian clearly created a better position and Carlsen and the home crowd left in Stavanger on the edge.
Then, in a stunning turn over six movements, Carlsen turned the defense into an attack. With his two knights and hanger, he started a sharp attack on Erigaisi’s king. It was a masterpiece demonstration of coordination of pieces and ingenuity, because Carlsen first rescued from a dangerous position and then created a Counter-Play.
Despite his efforts, Carlsen could not convert the advantage into victory and agreed to draw three times repetition – the result that eventually secured his championship.
The title could be determined by two Armageddon games if Gukesh managed to draw against Caruana at their classic meeting. The match was incredibly close: Caruana won Move 47, but washed with a pawn.
Gukesh, however, made a costly mistake in moving 48. Instead of capturing the bishop with his queen, he elevated his infantry to the queen – a move that allowed the Caruana to add a knight fork and gained a decisive advantage.
This mistake not only cost Gukesh the chance to attack the title, but also saw him slipping from the second place, which was requested by Caruana.
