Australia captain Alyssa Healy has banished a haunting memory from the recent Women’s World Cup on Indian soil with the attitude of a seasoned champion during the 2025 edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
Healy, who played for the Sydney Sixers Women, took a compound catch from the top edge to help Lauren Cheatle dismiss Lizelle Lee in the match against the Hobart Hurricanes at North Sydney Oval on Thursday 13 November. In the 12th over the Hurricanes’ chase, Lee tried to clear off Cheatle’s balloon bowling, only to ball Healy. With steady eyes, strong hands and perfect execution, Healy held his own.
The moment carried special weight as it mirrored an almost identical scenario from the World Cup semi-final against India at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Two weeks ago, Healy dropped a catch when India’s Jemimah Rodrigues was on 82 with Alana King bowling. Rodrigues used that lifeline to score an unbeaten 127 a led India to a record five-wicket victorythus ending Australia’s 16-match unbeaten run at the World Cup.
After catching Lee, Healy’s reaction said it all: it was as if she was telling herself that if she held the World Cup semi-final catch, Australia would be in the final with a chance of winning their eighth World Cup title. At night, WBBL immediately recognized the echo. She raised her eyebrows, smiled in relief, and tossed the ball aside, leaving her and her teammates to celebrate. The message was clear: the semi-final mess is behind her.
Healy had a solid performance with the bat, scoring 37 off 26 balls, including six fours, while batting at No. 3. She helped lay the groundwork as the Sixers posted 152 for nine in their 20 overs. However, her efforts went in vain as the Hurricanes chased down the target with 19 balls to spare to win the match by six wickets.
