In Thailand, a hungry elephant entered the grocery store and was looking for snacks and stuck under a low roof. 27 -year -old wild elephant, Plai Biang Lek, is known in the area near the Khao Yai National Park.
On June 2, he surprised the merchants in Ratchasima by going directly to their shop. The CCTV shots showed him that he gently pushed the freezer with his trunk and reached the refreshment counter.
He grabbed about 10 packs of sweets, along with dried bananas and peanut delicacies. He continued calm for about 10 minutes.
The owner of the Khamploi Kakaew shop said the business was slow in the afternoon. She tried to throw him away. “The shop was a little slow that day. Around 2 pm the elephant just went upwards. I went out and tried to throw it away. I said it wouldn’t get closer,” CNN quoted Kakaew.
But he didn’t listen. Outside the shop, another elephant was still waiting, “probably waiting”, according to its owner.
“He is often here, but he will never hurt anyone. I think he just wanted refreshments,” Khamploi added.
After a surprising visit, a group of wild animals came and offered Khamploi 800 Baht for stolen food.
“They said” sponsored snacks of an elephant ” – it was a bit funny,” the store owner said.
Elephants often pass through the area, but that was the first time he entered the store. Fortunately, no one was injured. The locals laughed and shared videos online. They called the elephant smart and cheeky for remembering where the refreshments were kept.
Elephants vs people
The elephant, the Thai national animal, faces a great decline in their wild population for tourism, mining, poaching and people who move to their forest homes. Of the more than 1 lacquer elephants at the beginning of the 20th century, only 3,000 to 4,000 remain today, CNN reported.
In Khao Yai, local volunteers try to prevent elephants from entering villages. One elephant, biang les, now lives in a village and often damages property in finding food.
Such close contact can be dangerous, sometimes even leads to the destruction of elephants.
Khao Yai National Park has around 140–200 wild elephants. Efforts to maintain the safety of humans and animals, added the publication.
