Viral Messi memes flood the internet ahead of Spain-Argentina World Cup final | Follow | Today’s news
It’s highly unlikely that you’ve missed this meme, especially if you’re a regular social media user. Lionel Messi was in the news during the FIFA World Cup 2026. But that’s another reason.
The new GOAT meme opens up new interpretations. The most prominent emotion reflected is intimidation.
In the meme, Lionel Messi is seen calmly nodding to England’s Jude Bellingham during their 2026 World Cup semi-final. Bellingham is said to have been talking and laughing at Messi after the physical clash.
Instead of retaliating, Messi remained stone-faced, raising his eyebrows and nodding silently. Fans compared the look to Robert De Niro’s classic movie look. The moment came when England were defending a lead late in the match.
Soon after, Messi went into what fans called “boss fight mode”. He scored two decisive assists and inspired Argentina to a dramatic 2-1 comeback.
Social media quickly turned the nod into a meme format. Users paired it with headlines about quiet trust, keeping receipts and actions speaking louder than words. They frame it as a warning of future problems.
Heated semifinals
Argentina beat England 2-1 in a messy World Cup semi-final. The match was played at the Atlanta Stadium on 16 July (Indian time). Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute.
Argentina fought back late with two goals assisted by Lionel Messi. Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute. Lautaro Martinez scored the winner in the 92nd minute.
The game was wild and physical from the opening whistle. Tempers flared up in just 3 minutes. Elliot Anderson from the England team reached out to the opponent, kicked between the two teams.
Jude Bellingham also clashed with Leandro Paredes and Messi early on. The first half was scoreless but featured 19 combined fouls. Argentina used an aggressive stop-start tactic to thwart England’s build-up play. Following Gordon’s passing, manager Thomas Tuchel made heavily criticized defensive changes. He withdrew Gordon and switched to a back five system.
England subsequently conceded 88% of possession over the final 37 minutes. After the 78th minute, they failed to register a shot. Controversy followed even after the final whistle.
Argentinian players Lisandro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso unveiled a political banner. It read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, referring to the 1982 Falklands War.
The stunt drew swift condemnation from the British government. FIFA has since launched a disciplinary investigation into Argentina.
Separately, a furious Bellingham then confronted Argentina’s celebrating bench. He was filmed slapping substitute Valentino Barca in the head. This sparked a brief clash before the players were separated.
Argentina now advance to the final against Spain. England will instead face France in a play-off for 3rd place.
