The teenage sensation surpassed Andre Russell’s long-standing record, with the West Indies star having previously reached the landmark in 545 balls. Sooryavanshi now sits on top after another explosive innings that once again left the bowlers helpless in a high-pressure knockout clash. Fewest balls taken in 1000 IPL runs440 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi545 – Andre Russell560 – Tim David575 – Travis Head575 – Phil Salt The milestone came during a dramatic innings where Rajasthan Royals found themselves in immediate trouble after electing to bat first. RR lost Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opening over and Dhruv Jurel in the second as Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada struck the first blows. With Rajasthan under immense pressure, the franchise promoted Jadeja to No.4 in a move that completely changed the dynamic of the innings. Jadeja and Sooryavanshi capped the innings brilliantly as RR cruised to 82/2 in just eight overs. The partnership became even more important after Jadeja was forced to walk off injured as she struggled with an injury. Rajasthan then suffered another collapse as Riyan Parag and Dasun Shanaka departed in quick succession, leaving Sooryavanshi to carry the innings almost single-handedly again. Jadeja eventually returned to the crease and along with Sooryavanshi stitched a crucial partnership of 127 runs in just 65 balls to revive Rajasthan’s innings. Amid the rescue act, Sooryavanshi continued to rewrite history. During the shift he also became:

  • First uncapped player ever to score 700 runs in a single IPL season
  • First player in T20 history to score 500 overs in a single tournament

Despite the pressure of the knockout clash, Sooryavanshi once again played the innings at breathtaking speed. Interestingly, it was actually the slowest fifty of his IPL career, reaching the milestone in 28 balls. His previous slowest IPL fifty came off 27 balls last year in Delhi against Chennai Super Kings. The statistic perfectly captures the absurd level at which he has been batting this season. It was his eighth 50+ score in the IPL and he had reached the milestone in 17 or fewer balls on five of the previous seven occasions. Just when another century seemed inevitable, Sooryavanshi again fell short heartily in the 1990s. Attempting a top cut off Kagiso Rabada, the youngster failed to time it right and was caught at third by Prasidh Krishna for a sensational 96 off 47 balls, with eight fours and seven sixes. Even without that hundred, Sooryavanshi has already produced another historic night, adding another stunning tally to what is fast becoming one of the greatest IPL seasons anyone has ever seen from a batter, let alone a headless teenager.
