(AP Photo/Abbie Parr) Belgium produced a ferocious attacking display to beat tournament co-hosts the United States 4-1 at Seattle Stadium to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and end the Americans’ campaign on home soil abruptly. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice in the opening half before Hans Vanaken capitalized on a costly defensive error and Romelu Lukaku added the finishing touch in stoppage time. Despite Mauricio Pochettino dominating possession for years, Belgium’s clinical finishing and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive as they advanced to the quarter-finals with Spain at the Los Angeles Stadium on 10 July.

Belgium grabbed a devastating first-half double

Much of the build-up centered on FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing the striker to start after the governing body invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary rules. However, once the match started, Belgium quickly shifted their focus to the action on the pitch.Rudi Garcia’s side settled immediately and almost found an early breakthrough when the Belgian corner was only partially cleared by Timothy Castagne on the edge of the penalty area. The full-back charged through a crowded box and forced Matt Freese into an excellent dive that was an early warning of the pressure to come.Belgium continued to dominate the opening exchanges. Their aggressive pressure repeatedly disrupted the American pack and another dangerous move saw Dodi Lukebakio burst forward before cutting the ball back for Youri Tielemans. Reaching space inside the area, Tielemans curled his effort narrowly wide and squandered another promising opportunity. The breakthrough finally came in the ninth minute. Leandro Trossard worked space down the left before delivering a teasing cross that the United States defense couldn’t cleanly deal with. As the loose ball bounced dangerously inside the area, Nicolas Raskin was quickest to react, collecting possession before sliding in a composed pass from six yards out. Charles De Ketelaere timed his move perfectly and calmly poked home from close range to give Belgium a deserved 1-0 lead.

The United States gradually settled after a tough start and enjoyed more possession, eventually finishing the game with 57 percent possession and an impressive 89 percent passing accuracy compared to Belgium’s 83 percent. Despite effective circulation of possession, clear-cut opportunities remained rare against Belgium’s organized defensive shape.Their equalizer came in the 31st minute from a fortunate but forced penalty kick. After Balogun was fouled just outside the penalty area, Malik Tillman beat the free-kick and unleashed a powerful effort on goal. The strike struck the Belgian wall before taking a heavy deflection that completely fouled Thibaut Courtois and left the keeper stranded as the ball rolled into the far corner to make it 1-1.

Any momentum generated by the equalizer disappeared almost immediately.Belgium responded within two minutes with a move that perfectly illustrated their attacking quality. Trossard again found space on the left wing and sent a tempting loop into the penalty area. De Ketelaere moved away from his marker, met the delivery with a perfectly timed drive and fired a close-range header past Freese to restore Belgium’s advantage to 2-1. The quick response stunned the Seattle crowd and left Mauricio Pochettino visibly frustrated on the touchline after seeing his side concede almost immediately after the equaliser.

Freese’s mistake proves to be decisive as Belgium punish every mistake

The United States tried to start the second half with more urgency, pushing Christian Pulisic and Balogun further forward in search of another equalizer. However, Belgium remained composed defensively while continuing to threaten whenever they transitioned quickly. The match was practically decided in the 57th minute after a disastrous defensive error.A long Belgian ball over the top looked relatively harmless, but confusion between the American defense and goalkeeper Matt Freese proved costly. Freese ran well outside his penalty area with the intention of clearing the danger before faltering under pressure from De Ketelaere. The loose ball fell to substitute Hansi Vanaken, who immediately recognized the unobserved goal and calmly curled a long-range finish into the empty goal. Experienced defender Tim Ream desperately sprinted back and launched a sliding effort to prevent a goal, but the ball comfortably crossed the line to give Belgium a 3-1 lead.

The setback became more damaging when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off after a collision with Tielemans, further reducing the Americans’ attacking threat during the closing stages.Pochettino’s side continued to find a way back into the competition despite the deficit. Sebastian Berhalter went close with a powerful long-range strike that went narrowly wide, while Balogun finally found space behind the Belgian defense after being released by a wonderful lifted pass. The striker advanced from a tight angle and tried to beat Courtois at his near post, but the towering Belgian goalkeeper stood firm and produced another crucial save to deny the visitors any hope of a late comeback.Belgium’s attacking efficiency remained the decisive difference between the two sides. Although the United States controlled possession, Belgium consistently created the clearer openings, finishing with a total of 15 shots, seven on target and five corners, compared to the Americans’ six shots, only two of which tested Courtois. With the United States tied in the break, Belgium struck the final blow on the counter-attack. Jérémy Doku accelerated into open space before slotting a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Romelu Lukaku. The experienced striker held off his defender, drove into the penalty area and in the third minute of added time, swept his finish beyond Freese with aplomb to complete an emphatic 4-1 victory.

Belgium finished the night without a single booking, while the United States picked up two yellow cards during a frustrating night in Seattle. In the end, the possession stats didn’t count as Belgium showed ruthless efficiency in both penalty areas and punished every major mistake by the Americans to end the co-hosts’ World Cup campaign. The win sends the Red Devils into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain on July 10 in Los Angeles. For the United States, hopes of reaching a first World Cup quarter-final since 2002 ended as defensive lapses and missed opportunities turned an otherwise encouraging home tournament into disappointment.
