US-Iran News LIVE: US faced with Iranian drone attack ‘launched towards Strait of Hormuz’, fires at 2 coastal sites | Today’s news
US-Iran News LIVE: A day after US President Donald Trump said “final negotiations” were underway to end the war with Iran, the US military said it shot down four Iranian drones that were launched towards the Strait of Hormuz.
Two Islamic Republic coastal radar stations were hit in Friday’s retaliation to defend against further attacks, according to US Central Command. US forces claimed the drone strike posed an immediate threat to regional shipping.
What’s the news about the peace deal?
The recent attacks raised new concerns about the truce deal, but Trump confirmed Friday that “the situation with Iran seems pretty good,” the AP reported. Amid a tenuous ceasefire, the US and Iran have engaged in mostly indirect negotiations to secure an interim agreement to end the three-month-old war, which began on February 28, 2026.
Facing mounting domestic political pressure over rising gas prices ahead of midterm congressional elections, Donald Trump told NBC that while most of Iran’s drone and missile facilities had been destroyed, Tehran still had access to about a fifth of its missiles.
“They have some missiles, they have some drones. I would say a percentage, maybe 21%-22% of their missiles. It’s a lot of missiles, but it’s not what it was when we first attacked,” NBC News quoted Trump as saying.
A week ago, US and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and start a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump called for unspecified changes, however, saying Iranian officials had shown no public signs of signing the deal.
Efforts to reach a deal looked bleak after the two sides traded blows earlier this week. Tehran’s drone attack on Kuwait’s main airport claimed one life and injured several dozen, after which the airport was closed.
A parallel conflict is taking place in Lebanon with Washington trying to resolve the regional war. In the peace proposal, Iran made clear its demand for a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, reaffirming its support for the armed group. An American-brokered truce between Israel and Lebanon broke down after Israel launched intense attacks on southern Lebanon. On Friday, the IDF struck several parts of southern Lebanon and issued an evacuation warning for nine villages. In response, the Iranian armed group Hezbollah said on Friday it had carried out two attacks on Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. The new attacks put the deal at further risk.
