Untreated sewage and domestic waste continue to be discharged into the Pallikaranai wetlands from the adjacent residential areas.
Vidyasagar Jagadeesan, an activist based in Chennai, claimed that he had recently observed sewage inflows at two places near the borders of the wetlands during a visit to a nearby park. “Untreated sewage and plastic waste are being discharged into the fresh water marshes of Pallikaranai,” he said. He added that the civic authorities must investigate those responsible for the contamination and take action.
