The country rifle used by the accused in the Maruthamkadu murder case near Kalladikode was not licensed, police said. Accused Binu shot dead his neighbor Nithin on Tuesday. Police found 17 bullets in a pouch attached to Binu’s waist and said he was poaching wild boars using an unlicensed weapon.
The bodies of Binu and Nithin were found with bullet injuries in Maruthamkad. Binu was believed to have killed Nithin inside his house and shot himself outside.
Police said Binu had reached Nithin’s house with the intention of killing him. The two were on friendly terms, but their relationship soured after Binu spoke ill of Nithin’s mother.
Locals told police they heard two gunshots Tuesday afternoon. Binu and Nitha’s bodies were recovered later and shifted to the Government District Hospital here.
Binu’s body was found in a pool of blood with a short gunshot wound to the chest. A pistol lay next to him. Nithin’s body was found lying on the verandah of his house with a knife in his left hand. Police said Nithin might have grabbed a knife to defend himself when Binu arrived with a weapon.
