Two unidentified suspected infiltrators, both believed to be in their twenties, were shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Friday (October 2, 2026).

A senior BSF official told The Hindu that the bodies were lying about 50 meters behind the border fence until the flag encounter with the Pakistan Rangers ended at 7:00 pm.

“There were three men who were advancing towards the border in daylight. They were trying to hide behind a paddy crop and enter India. BSF personnel challenged them but they continued to advance. In the process, two were shot while the third person returned,” the official said.

The incident was reported around 11:30 am near the Tarn Taran border. According to the official, the identity of the suspected intruders was yet to be ascertained and it was not clear if they were carrying weapons.

“The men were wearing Pathan suits and one of them was wearing an expensive watch. Pakistan Rangers asked for a meeting under the flag,” the official said. In a meeting held around 7:00 pm on Friday, the Pakistani Rangers sought to recover the bodies, the official said.

“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. After a meeting with the Pakistan Rangers, it was decided to hand over the bodies after completing the legal formalities,” the official said.

Local police were notified and court proceedings were underway late Friday.
