Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti Photo Exhibition at ANU

A photo exhibition, prize distribution and cultural programs marked the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at Acharya Nagarjuna University. The events were jointly organized by the University and the Photographic Academy of India.
Former minister Dokka Manikya Vara Prasada Rao, who attended the program as the chief guest, said that Mahatma Gandhi always identified with farmers, rural communities and common people and brought them into the freedom movement. He highlighted Gandhi’s struggle in South Africa, efforts for equality and contribution to the empowerment of women. Referring to Gandhi and Dr. BR Ambedkara said that their relationship should not be seen only through their differences as both worked in their own way for the upliftment of the downtrodden sections.
ANU Rector Prof. R. Sivarama Prasad said Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, discipline and public service remained relevant and urged government employees to prioritize the welfare of the people.
T. Srinivasa Reddy, Visiting Faculty (Photography), ANU and Founder Chairman Photography Academy of India (PAI) said organizing such events inspires photographers.
Professor M. Suresh Kumar, Principal, College of Arts, Commerce and Law, coordinated the programme. Secretary Professor G. Simhachalam and other guests spoke on Gandhi’s philosophy.
A photo exhibition featuring rare photographs of Gandhi’s life was organized. About 40 photographers from across India received awards for their participation in the Independence Day Photography Competition organized by the Academy of Photography of India.
Among the recipients were two photojournalists from The Hindu — GN Rao of Vijayawada and Kommuri Srinivasa Rao of Ongole.
