Twish Sharma death: AIIMS report links gymnastic belt to neck injury, CBI reviews forensic findings | Today’s news

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is reviewing the final forensic report prepared by the AIIMS Delhi medical board on the death of former model Twisha Sharma, who was found hanging at her marital residence in Bhopal on May 12. According to news agency PTI, the report concludes that a gymnastic belt may have been used as a bandage in the case.

The 11-page report was submitted to the CBI in a sealed envelope on July 10. According to PTI, forensic experts confirmed the presence of skin tissue on the gymnastic belt, which had a metal ring attached to it. The findings reportedly indicate that the belt matches the injury pattern found on Twisha’s neck.

The AIIMS Delhi Medical Board was constituted after the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second post-mortem. The court later handed over the probe to the CBI, which is now examining the report as part of its investigation.

Twisha (33) got married to Samarth Singh in December last year. She was found hanged at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on 12 May.

A second autopsy ordered after concerns about the initial examination

The initial post-mortem report could not determine the ligature used, as the gymnastic belt was not available to the coroners during the inspection. The police later recovered the belt and sent it to the medical board headed by AIIMS Delhi for further analysis.

According to the FIR, Samarth Singh took Twisha to AIIMS Bhopal and informed the doctor that she had hanged herself at home on May 12 around 10.20 pm. However, a doctor at AIIMS Bhopal informed the police the next day that she was brought dead to the hospital, leading to the registration of a medico-legal case.

The FIR also states that Twisha spoke to her mother at 9.41 pm on the day of her death. Her family claimed that Samarth was heard screaming during the call before he ended abruptly. After repeated attempts to reach her failed, the FIR claims, Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge, answered a later call and informed Twisha’s sister-in-law that she was “no more” before hanging up.

The family was allegedly harassed by dowry and domestic violence

The first post-mortem report concluded that the cause of death was “pre-mortem hanging by ligature” and also noted the presence of “multiple pre-mortem injuries”. Due to deficiencies in the initial investigation and post-mortem, Twisha’s family moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which conducted the second post-mortem at AIIMS Delhi.

The family also alleged that Twisha was harassed by her in-laws due to dissatisfaction with the dowry given at the time of her marriage. They further accused them of psychological harassment and domestic violence and claimed that this drove the former model and actor to the extreme step.

The AIIMS forensic team gives an opinion based on a detailed scientific assessment

The AIIMS Delhi Medical Committee conducted a second post-mortem on May 24 and also inspected the crime scene as part of its investigation. While Dr. Sudhir Gupta, head of the department of forensic medicine at AIIMS Delhi, declined to reveal the report’s findings, saying the board had conducted a detailed scientific evaluation before arriving at its conclusions.

“The medical board considered the case in great detail from all possible angles, considered all available national and international journals for almost a month before giving a detailed opinion with scientific justification. It is a crystal clear opinion for the CBI and the judiciary in the interest of truth and justice,” Gupta said, according to PTI.

He declined to comment further, saying the report was submitted to the CBI in a sealed envelope as per Supreme Court directions.
