On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump will organize a private discussion of oval offices with Prime Minister Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, shows the White House schedule. The meeting is significant because it comes in the middle of sour relations between the US and India.
Sharif arrives in Washington after participating in the UN General Assembly in New York.
Heating links between the US and Pakistan
US-Pakistani ties have been warmed up under Trump’s government in recent months. For years, Washington leaned on India to face China’s influence in Asia. Relationships with the new Delhi, however, have slipped due to problems such as visa obstacles to the Indians, high customs rates stored by Trump on goods from India and Trump’s repeated claim that he mediated India-Pakistan in May.
After the tension with the modi administration Trump welcomed the Pakistani army of the main field marshal Asim Munir at the beginning of this year, for the first time the US President hosted the head of the Pakistani army – widely considered the strongest figure in the country – in the White House, unaccompanied by higher Pakistani civilian officials.
Pakistan supported Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to de-schooling tensions between India and Pakistan, although Islamabad condemned the bombing of the US ally in Gaza, Qaja and Iran.
The United States and Pakistan also announced a business agreement 31. July with a 19% tariff rate stored by Washington.
On Tuesday, Sharif also had an informal exchange with Trump after a meeting between the US President and the leaders of eight Islamic Arab countries, including Pakistan.
What did the White House say about the meeting?
“We are working on a number of questions in terms of the fight against terrorism in terms of economic and business ties,” said a higher Foreign Ministry official on Tuesday to briefing journalists when he asked Pakistan. “So the president focuses on the development of US interests in the region, which includes cooperation with Pakistan and their government leaders,” the official said.
According to the schedule, Trump will also sign executive orders before meeting with Sharif, including the potential completion of the Tiktok security agreement.
