Trump Says Iran Promised ‘No Toll’ in Hormuz; warns, ‘if it is false information, the talks would end immediately’ | Today’s news

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (June 24th) that Iran had assured Washington that it would not impose tolls, insurance or other charges on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that ongoing negotiations would end immediately if the information was proven false.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump dismissed reports suggesting Iran was trying to collect fees on international shipping passing through the waterway, which carries a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supplies.

Trump refers to Iranian assurances

According to Trump, Tehran told the United States that it does not demand any payments from ships using the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran has informed the US that, despite troubling false reports to the contrary, there are ‘NO TOLLS, NO INSURANCE CHARGES AND NO OTHER CHARGES OF ANY KIND THAT IRAN SEEKS OR ACCEPTS ON SHIPS PASSING THROUGH THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ.’

The statement comes amid efforts by Washington and Tehran to build on a recently announced interim peace understanding aimed at reducing tensions after months of conflict.

Warning before negotiation

Trump also strongly warned that the future of negotiations would depend on the accuracy of Iran’s assurances.

“If it is false information, the negotiations would end immediately!”

The comments underscore the fragile nature of the diplomatic process, with the two sides continuing to negotiate on issues ranging from sanctions relief and nuclear inspections to regional security measures.

Trump rejects claims of direct payments to Iran

The president also sought to clarify reports regarding Iranian funds held under US control, insisting that Washington did not transfer the money directly to Tehran.

“No money has been given to Iran or released from their money by the US”

The issue of frozen Iranian assets remained one of the most sensitive topics in the ongoing talks.

The US plans to use Iranian funds to buy food

Trump said the administration intends to release some of the Iranian funds under US control, but only for the purchase of US agricultural products destined for Iran.

“We will release some of their money, which we have complete control over, to our farmers and ranchers to buy corn, wheat, soybeans and more.”

The proposal would effectively channel Iranian funds into purchases from American manufacturers, rather than providing unrestricted access to cash.

“They desperately need food in Iran”

Trump argued that there were humanitarian reasons behind the arrangement and said Iran faced a significant food need.

“They are in desperate need of food in Iran and we will be buying it for them exclusively from the United States.”

The remarks suggest the administration is trying to balance humanitarian aid with maintaining influence over Iran through continued control over its frozen assets.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy choke points, connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets. Any disruption to waterway navigation could have significant implications for global oil prices and energy security.

Recent tensions in the region have raised concerns about maritime security and the possibility of new fees or restrictions on commercial vessels. Trump’s statement seeks to reassure markets that Iran is not currently taking such measures.

While Trump’s comments indicate some progress in US-Iranian diplomacy, major issues remain unresolved, including sanctions relief, nuclear monitoring measures and broader regional security concerns.
