With the mettur dam, which is to be opened for irrigation on June 12, the WRD department (WRD) has completed a special shut -off work, which was accepted this year at various irrigation and drainage channels across the district sanctioned at estimated costs of 16.70 Crore this year.
About 115 works covering about 343.14 km of different channels throughout the district were cleaned from the mud as part of the initiative by preserving the river and the ARIYARA divisions. The work would benefit about 1.18 lakh acres of cultivable soil in the district.
“All the work was completed,” said a higher WRD official. About the fresh water hyacinth growth on the Uyyakondan channel said Hindu that weeds would be cleaned when they began to float and easier to remove after release of water in the channel.
C and d channels
Meanwhile, the Agricultural Engineering Department has completed the shutdown work on the channels of categories C and D. “In the district we resisted C and D channels for estimated CRORE costs of 1.02 GBP,” said A. Kandasamy, executive engineer, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Tiruchi.
