A couple and their son were arrested near Polur town in Tiruvannamalai for allegedly killing a rural chicken wholesaler over a financial dispute.
Police said the arrested persons were identified as B. Ellumalai, 58, his wife E. Sakthi, 51, and son E. Sakthivel, 21. They were residents of Alangaramangalam village near Polur town. Initial investigation revealed that the victim, K. Sankar, 55, a resident of Maraimalai Nagar near Vandalur in Chennai, was a wholesale chicken trader. He used to buy chicken from wholesale markets in nearby districts like Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Kancheepuram and sell them at retail outlets in his residential area.
Police said that as part of his business, Sankar went to Dharmapuri on March 10 to buy country chicken on his two-wheeler. On his return, he had lunch at a roadside restaurant where he befriended key suspect Sathivel.
Police said suspect Sakthivel lured Sankar to his farmland in Alangaramangalam village on the pretext of discussing chicken farm ideas. Sakthivel also promised to buy a chicken from Sankara. Police said the duo was consuming alcohol on the farm land. After some time, when Sankar demanded money for the chicken that Sakthivel had promised to buy, the duo got into an argument. In a fit of rage, Sakthivel stabbed Sankar, who collapsed on the spot.
Sakthivel immediately informed his parents Ellumalai and Sakthi, who helped him dump Sankar’s body, a lot of chicken and the two-wheeler at the farm. Based on a complaint by Sankar’s family, the Maraimalai Nagar police traced Sankar’s mobile phone signal and found that he was last seen in Tiruvannamalai. Acting on a tip-off from the local police, the Maraimalai Nagar police nabbed the suspects. A probe is underway.
