At least three people died and one was seriously injured after a BMW crashed on Mumbai’s coastal road near Lotus jetty early Sunday morning.
The incident took place at 5.20am when the luxury car was moving at high speed from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali.
An unverified video on social media showed the fall from a coastal road in Mumbai. Another video from the scene of the accident showed a crashed black BMW with police and a forensics team present.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Tardeo Police Station, Meena Jagtap told ANI, “The BMW met with an accident at around 5.20 am. The vehicle was traveling north from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when it fell off the elevated part of the coastal road.”
Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58 km long expressway connecting Marine Drive in South Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra–Worli Sea Link.
Three dead, one injured
Police said there were four people in the car. “Three people have lost their lives and one is injured,” said Meena Jagtap.
The two deceased victims were identified as Shanay Gajjal (21) and Dhirya Seth (17), while an unidentified 25-year-old man was also declared dead, according to the hospital’s chief medical officer, Nair, as reported by ANI.
A 20-year-old unidentified man is in a critical condition in the trauma ward, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Four people were initially injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
What led to the accident?
The incident occurred when the car driver lost control of the wheels near Lotus Jetta, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College, according to the Coastal Road Control Room.
While the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, information received by the Coastal Road Command has reportedly revealed that the accident occurred due to over speeding.
According to the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC), a “speeding” BMW heading towards Haji Ali from Marine Drive crashed, leaving three dead and one critically injured.
On whether the passengers in the car were drunk, the police told ANI, “As to whether they were under the influence of intoxicants or out of control, that is currently under investigation.”

The official said: “An autopsy is underway, but no definitive findings regarding intoxication have yet been confirmed… The injured individual is currently receiving treatment.”
