New York, September 25 (PTI) The US is looking for more business and energy cooperation with its “amazing ally” India, said Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and at the same time recognized “friction” among countries in the new Delhi imports of discounted Russian oil in sanctions.
Wright made notes at a press conference organized in the New York Foreign Press Center on Wednesday at the UN General Assembly.
“A lot of my early time, when I arrived in my position, dealt with India-mostly democracy in the world, an amazing ally of the United States, a fast-growing economy, a truly dynamic society,” he said in response to the question of PTI.
Wright said India has a rapidly growing energy demand to increase prosperity and the opportunity among his people.
“I am a big fan of India; we love India. We look forward to the next energy store, further interactions back and forth with India,” he said.
Wright responded to the question of PTI on the recent comments of the Minister of Trade Piyush Goyal about the expansion of energy trade with Washington and that Indian energy security goals will have a high element of American involvement.
“And then India is caught in the middle of another issue,” Wright said, referring to shopping for Russian oil of the new Delhi.
Wright noted that the US main interest remains the flow of sanctioned Russian oil to countries such as India, China and Turkiy, which helps to finance war in Ukraine.
“And that is friction. Friction is in this matter. We want to end this war. I believe the Indians want to end this war. And we want to expand our energy cooperation with India – in natural gas, coal, nuclear, nuclear, clean cooking and liquid oil.
Wright said that the “greatest passion” of US President Donald Trump is to achieve peace in the world.
“When I talk to him, it doesn’t matter what the topic is, there is peace. How can we use our instruments and leverage to control peace? And the Russian war in Ukraine is of course brutal. We all want to see it,” he said.
Wright responded to the question of possible solutions to reduce India’s dependence on Russian oil and said there were many alternative suppliers around the world.
“India buys Russian oil because she can buy it for cheaper because no one wants to buy Russian oil, so she has to sell it at a discount. India has decided to compromise to buy cheaper oil and appearance, it gives money guys who murder thousands of people every week.”
“Of course, we want India to work with us – you can buy oil from every nation on Earth, just not Russian oil. This is our position. America has oil for sale, but all others. We do not want to punish India.
Asked if he was going to meet his Indian counterpart for dialogue in the future, he said, “Absolutely”, he added that he met Jaishankar in external matters Jaishankar in January Trump’s Night and discussed future cooperation between the two countries.
“Trying to find peace in Ukraine is a sticky thing and we are, both in the cabinet in the United States and with our allies and we are trying to find the most creative ways to end this war.
“The President does not want to end anything but this war and it would have another advantage in removing the source of friction. I am everything in energy cooperation and business cooperation with India.
On Tuesday, Trade Minister Goyal said India expected to increase his business with US energy products in the coming years.
“Being close to friends, natural partners, our energy security goals will have a very high element of the involvement of the American to ensure price stability, diversified energy sources for India and help us unlock unlimited capabilities with the US on different fronts, energy and on,” he said.
Trump’s administration imposed another 25 % tariff in India as a punishment for buying Russian oil, with total USA’s total doses to 50 %, among the highest in the world.
India claims that its energy contracts are powered by the national interest and dynamics of the market. India turned to the purchase of Russian oil sold for a discount after the Western countries deposited sanctions on Moscow and in February 2022 avoided its supplies over the invasion of Ukraine.
In 2024-25, the US remained the largest business partner in India for the fourth consecutive year, with bilateral trade worth $ 131.84 billion ($ 86.5 billion).
The US represents approximately 18 % of total exports between Indian goods, 6.22 % in imports and 10.73 % in total goods trade.
