The probe was launched after a drone was found flying over the Viyoor Central Jail in the early hours of Friday (June 26, 2026).
According to police, security personnel saw a drone flying over the prison grounds several times between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.
The drone was also seen flying over the nearby Fire Rescue Academy and university campus.
Prison department officials immediately alerted the police, who launched an investigation into the incident.
Police said Viyoor Central Jail is a sensitive facility as it houses a high-security prison housing several accused in terror-related cases.
Flying drones is prohibited in the area, officials said.
Officers at Viyoor police station said a case would be registered after preliminary investigation.
Investigators believe the drone may have been controlled to create content for social media. However, they said that all possible angles are being explored.
The state’s special branch, the intelligence wing of the Kerala police, is also gathering information about the incident, officials added.
