The Tirupati District Police has invoked the provisions of the Preventive Detention (PD) Act under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 to combat narcotics-related crime.
The PD Act was applied to Karani Sai Kumar (22), Cherukuthi Vamsi (24), Paipuri Venugopal (45), P. Parandamu (58), all from Srikalahasti, Sadu Hari (28) from Padmavathipuram in Tirupati and Nallu Murali (31) from Tada.
Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu announced that rampant crime by repeat offenders and ensuring public safety necessitated the crackdown on habitual offenders.
Taking a serious look at the rising narcotics cases within the police limits of Srikalahasti I, II Town, Thottambedu and Tiruchanur, all of which are located in and around the pilgrimage centres, six offenders have been booked. Given that a similar measure was taken against seven people in the past, the number of offenders brought under the Personal Data Protection Act without state consent increases to 13.
Our department has acted tough by giving full powers to all its wings to achieve the common goal of ‘drug and crime free Tirupati district’, said Mr. Subbarayudu.
