The number of drought-affected taluks rose to 124 with 23 more added

Karnataka on Thursday declared 23 more talukas as drought-affected, taking the total number of drought-affected talukas in the state to 124.

Of the 23 taluks declared drought-affected, 21 were classified as ‘severely drought-affected’ and two as ‘moderately drought-affected’ after the ground exercise was conducted in the second round.

As of the latest notification, the state has a total of 110 taluks in severe drought-hit category and 14 as moderately drought-hit. A total of 101 taluks were declared drought-hit in the first round on August 27.

The severely drought-hit talukas in the second round are Tiptur, Karatagi, Manvi, Sindhanur, Sirawara, Afzalpur, Aland, Chittapur, Kalaburgi, Yadrami, Shahbad, Bhalki, Basavanabagewadi, Bableshwar, Tikota, Rattehalli, Hubdurbali, Navalli City

Further, taking into account rainfall between June 1 and September 16, soil moisture and crop condition, among others, 53 taluks in 17 districts were selected for the third round of ground verification. A team of officials will visit villages in these taluks on September 19 and 20 to check crop losses and the teams have been asked to submit a report by September 21.

Speaking on social media platform ‘X’, Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G. Parameshwara said, “On the basis of necessity, more taluks would be included in the ground truthing exercise in the fourth round.”
