Karnataka State Council of Higher Education (KSHEC) Vice-Chairman SR Niranjana said there is a need for large-scale use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve academic standards.
On Monday, he was inaugurating an international conference on ‘Responsible Artificial Intelligence’ organized at Karnataka University, Dharwad.
The Department of Computer Science, Karnataka University organized an international conference in association with Cardiff Metropolitan University, Canara Engineering College, KLE Technological University, Mangalore University, University of Wales, Presidency University and PM USHA.
Prof. Niranjana said that the education system has evolved from the gurukul system to artificial intelligence (AI) and now there is a need to prioritize skill-based education.
“For students to excel at the global level, they should not only have a thorough knowledge of their domain but also an understanding of other fields,” he said.
Prof. Niranjana said that after independence, food, communication and poverty became a challenge and these problems were solved through adaptation of technology and revolutions in various sectors.
Only through social and economic development can India achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat, he said.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma said that artificial intelligence, which is the brainchild of human intelligence, has spread its tentacles to all fields. Now is the time for universities to build academic relationships with other universities and make efforts to further improve academics, he added.
Davangere University Vice-Chancellor BD Kumbar warned students against excessive use of artificial intelligence as it will adversely affect human thinking capacity.
Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad, Mahadev Prasanna said that artificial intelligence is now taking the form of an industry. This has led to its wide use in various fields.
Karnataka University Vice-Chancellor AM Khan, presiding over the inaugural ceremony, emphasized the need for proper use of artificial intelligence to build a healthcare society.
Aghnesh Anupam of Cardiff Metropolitan University, Karnatak University Registrar (Evaluation) NY Mattihal, Head of Department of Computer Science Sridevi, Vijaykumar Gurani and others were present.
