The ruling National Conference (NC) has introduced a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to bring back power projects run by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to Jammu and Kashmir.
In a resolution, NC leader Sajad Shaheen sought the House’s nod to “recommend that the Government of India consider a phased and mutually agreed transfer of operational control and/or ownership of the running hydro projects currently operated by NHPC”.
Mr. Shaheen’s resolution calls for consultation with the Union Territory government and other stakeholders “in accordance with constitutional provisions, existing laws and intergovernmental arrangements”.
The return of projects run by the NHPC of J&K has been an old demand of the NC and often finds a place in the party’s manifesto.
“We have clearly stated in our manifesto that some power projects should be returned to J&K. It is a real demand. We will follow it,” said NC leader and legislator Tanvir Sadiq.
The hydropower conversion remained “critical for the region”. “J&K should get its rights back. Return of NHPC projects is a real demand,” Mr. Sadiq said.
