Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Indonesia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono hosted the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission meeting here on Sunday (June 7, 2026).
In a press statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said the two ministers engaged in a “full spectrum” review of bilateral relations covering cooperation in defence, security, maritime transport, trade and investment, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, digital technology, energy, connectivity, space, education, consular and cultural fields, as well as political ties.
Indonesia is an important partner of India in the Southeast Asian region and overall ties, including trade and investment, between the two sides have been growing over the past few years.

“The two sides exchanged views on regional and global developments of common interest and reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation and coordination in regional and multilateral forums,” the ministry said. After the meeting, Mr Jaishankar said the talks were “substantial”.
The meeting of the joint commission was held after a gap of four years, Mr. Jaishankar said in his opening address and informed that during the last four years, both sides had made “good progress” in bilateral relations.
Mr Sugiono said Indonesia was looking forward to Mr Modi’s visit, which is expected in the coming weeks. He said the visit would provide “an important opportunity to further deepen our cooperation and bring tangible benefits to our nations.”
The visit will be reciprocal from the Indian side as Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in New Delhi in January 2025 when he was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
