The first phase of the newly established Institute of Organ Transplantation in Kozhikode will be launched soon after the state cabinet approved the creation of 60 new posts for the Institute.
The cabinet, which met on Wednesday, approved 14 positions of professors, seven positions of docents and 39 assistant professors for the institute.
In the first phase, the Organ Transplant Institute will function from the Kozhikode Government Medical College. Work on the first phase is expected to begin soon
The government has sanctioned ₹ 643.88 crore to make the organ transplant institute a reality. The institute will be launched with full facilities including sophisticated equipment.
The government envisages the Institute of Organ Transplantation as an umbrella organization that brings together scientists, researchers and expert clinicians to coordinate all activities related to organ donation and transplantation in the state, including treatment and rehabilitation. The institute will come up on 20 acres at Chevayur in Kozhikode.
The institute will manage not only organ transplants and treatment, but also research, teaching, training, and activities to promote organ donation. It is envisaged to provide comprehensive care and patient care, from the treatment of end-stage organ failure to organ transplantation as well as post-transplant rehabilitation.
The institute will be in four blocks of six floors. The plan is to build a modern 510-bed hospital with 219 general beds, 42 special ward beds, 58 ICU beds, 83 high dependency unit beds, 16 operating theaters, a dialysis center and a transplant research center.
In the first phase, 330 beds and 10 operating theaters will be prepared, and in the second phase, the remaining 180 beds and six operating theaters will be completed. 14 special divisions will be created in the first phase and seven more in the second phase.
The government is also seeking to develop the institute as a major learning center and is seeking to start 31 academic courses.
Once fully operational, the institute will have the capacity to transplant various organs, including cornea, kidney, liver, intestine, pancreas, heart, lung, bone marrow, soft tissue, hands and bones, the statement said.
Currently, all organ transplant operations in the public sector are managed by the Government Medical College Hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kozhikode as well as the Ernakulam General Hospital.
