The fire at a garbage dump in Hosayallapur in Dharwad was reportedly caused by a chemical reaction triggered by the summer heat. And the smoke coming from the yard engulfed various residential areas in the city.
As the smog continued for four days, residents staged protests, blocked roads and garbage collectors demanded immediate action from the civic authorities to solve the problem.
Subsequently, the municipal staff together with fire and rescue service personnel managed to bring the fire under control after days of intensive efforts. It was Thursday noon when the fire was completely extinguished.
