The Bay of Bengal depression is likely to intensify and affect the Andhra-Odisha coast | Today’s news
A trough over the central west and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression between late September 23 and early September 24 and cross the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, while coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to receive heavy rainfall on September 23, while Chhattisgarh and Telangana are likely to experience heavy rainfall during September 23-24.
The weather system comes as the Southwest Monsoon begins its annual withdrawal from Northwest India. Conditions remain favorable for further withdrawal from remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, some other parts of Rajasthan and parts of Saurashtra & Kutch, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh during the next two days.
The southwest monsoon season has so far brought a cumulative rainfall of 703.7 mm during June 1 to September 21, which is 15% below the normal of 827.2 mm.
Rainfall will remain widespread
Central India is likely to experience widespread rain, thundershowers and lightning over East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha during 23-27. September and over Chhattisgarh during 23–28 September. West Madhya Pradesh may experience isolated to scattered rain during this period.
In eastern India, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal are likely to see widespread rains during 23-26. September, Jharkhand during 23-27 September and Bihar during 24-27 September. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may also experience widespread rains during 23-27. September.
Widespread rains and thundershowers are likely to occur in the northwest during the Uttar Pradesh holiday on 25-27. September while Uttarakhand may experience similar conditions during 26-28 September. Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad may experience widespread rain on September 28.
In Northeast, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to witness widespread rains on September 23, while Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may witness isolated to scattered rains during September 23-28.
In the west, Konkan & Goa and Marathwada India are likely to see widespread rains on September 23, while Gujarat may see isolated to scattered rain during September 23-28. September.
The IMD has also forecast winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, over Konkan and Goa during 23-24. September and over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during 23-25 September.
