The southern peninsula is likely to see subdued rainfall over the next week | Today’s news
Rain activity is likely to remain muted over southern peninsular India over the next week, with most areas expected to receive only isolated to scattered showers, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), even as a low pressure system triggers heavy rainfall over parts of central India.
The Meteorological Department said isolated to scattered rain is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Kerala and Mahe, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Telangana during 4-9. September.
In the southern peninsula, coastal Karnataka is expected to be the major exception with a fairly widespread to widespread rainfall forecast during 4-9. September. Lakshadweep is also likely to witness moderate to widespread rainfall during September 8-9.

The relatively subdued rainfall outlook comes as the monsoon remains more active over central, northern and parts of eastern India. A well-marked low pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas is expected to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh during September 4-5.
Forecast for Central India
In northwest India, moderate to widespread rainfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh during September 4-5 and Uttarakhand till September 9. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas are likely to witness widespread rains on September 4, while isolated to scattered showers are again expected during September 5-9.
Punjab is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall during September 4-9, while Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are expected to receive such rainfall during September 6-9. West Uttar Pradesh is likely to experience showers during September 7-9, while east Uttar Pradesh may receive rain on September 4-5 and again on September 9.
Occasional rain is also expected in Rajasthan. West Rajasthan is likely to see isolated to scattered showers during September 4-6, while East Rajasthan is forecast to witness rain on September 3 and again during September 5-9.

In eastern India, moderate to widespread rainfall is forecast over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 4-9 September. Gangetic West Bengal is likely to experience widespread rainfall during September 4-5 and again from September 7-9. Bihar is expected to receive rainfall on 4-5. September and September 9, while Jharkhand could receive such rainfall during September 8-9. September.
The northeast is also likely to remain wet, with widespread rainfall forecast over Arunachal Pradesh during 5-8. September, by Assam and Meghalaya during September 4 and 6–8. September and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura by September 9.
The weather system is coming as several parts of central and north India have already received heavy rainfall. In the last 24 hours, very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm was recorded at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm was reported in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Maharashtra and Assam.

Meanwhile, India’s cumulative rainfall during the southwest monsoon season remained 13% below normal till September 3, with the country receiving 624.5 mm of rain against the normal 724.1 mm for the period since June 1, according to the meteorological department.
