Matthew Hayden didn’t hold back after Gujarat Titans’ heavy defeat by Mumbai Indians, calling it a “terrible day” and pointing to the collapse of the top order as the determining factor. GT never really got going in their chase of 200 in Ahmedabad, undoing the platform they had built in the previous games.
This loss was particularly frustrating given Gujarat’s recent run record. After winning two of their last three chases, they once again found themselves in a position to hunt down a competitive total but failed to capitalize as early wickets derailed the innings.

After the match, Hayden reflected on the missed opportunity and lack of contribution from the top order.
“This is a 50/50 record for us now. I think we’re actually playing to that record. 3 wins, 3 losses. You know, before tonight we won 2 out of 3 runs. We got back into a position to chase runs and it wasn’t impossible. 200 is still the total I would give our three world-class players to get more opportunities to give our three world-class players classes helped. bat deep into the inning,” Hayden said in the postgame press conference.
“It was just a terrible day for us today. The truth behind it. There was nothing really good about the day except for KG Rabada’s performance,” he added.
The defeat came against a Mumbai side who entered the match on a four-game losing streak. Yet on the night, MI found a way to flip the script and produce one of their most complete performances of the season.
HOW MI THUMPEL GT IN AHMEDABAD
The turnaround was done by Tilak Varma who produced an amazing unbeaten 101 off 45 balls. Coming in during a tricky phase, he brilliantly shifted gears after MI reached 103 for 4 in the 14th over, turning a modest total into a daunting 199.
This late surge set the tone for what followed. Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball of the innings and immediately put Gujarat on the back foot. From there, the collapse picked up speed.
Ashwani Kumar then delivered the knockout blow with figures of 4 for 24 as wickets fell in bunches and no partnership could form. Gujarat Titans were eventually bowled out for 100 in 15.5 overs, giving Mumbai Indians an impressive 99-run win and a much-needed turnaround in their campaign.
