Electricity consumers in Telangana, except those using power to run their agricultural pump sets, are in for another shock as the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) approves actual charges of ₹5,420.23 crore to be collected from non-farm power consumers for power consumed during 2022-233 and 2022.232.

What are true fees?

Adjusted charges are the cost of the difference in energy already consumed – the difference between the cost of energy supplied and the price received from consumers. The increase in supply costs is attributed to an unexpected increase in fuel costs, power purchase and operating costs.

The total sanctioned rectification charges are ₹ 7,635.22 crore, including ₹ 2,214.99 crore for power consumed by agricultural pumping sets, which is provided free of cost. The commission suggested that the two discoms approach the state government for recovery of rectification charges for power consumed for agricultural pumping sets.

₹0.30 per unit in November, ₹0.50 per unit in December

Accordingly, ₹0.30 (30 paise) per unit will be recovered from domestic, commercial, industrial and lift irrigation systems from monthly bills issued in November and ₹0.50 (50 paise) per unit from December onwards. Refund or levy of rectification charges would be for 29 months in case of Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) consumers and for 26 months from Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGNPDCL) consumers.

What does this mean for domestic consumers?

For example, a household consuming 200 units of power per month would have to pay an additional charge of ₹60 in the bill to be issued in November, ₹100 from December to March 2029 in case of TGSPDCL consumers and by December 2028 in case of TGNPDCL consumers.

In its order passed on Monday (October 5, 2026), TGERC said the total repair cost of ₹ 7,635.22 crore includes ₹ 5,186.29 crore for power purchase in 2022-23 and ₹ 2,448.93 crore for ₹ 2,048.93 to ₹ 20.93 crore The total approved repairs work out to ₹ 0.80 per unit per unit in 2022–23 and ₹ 0.33 per unit for 2023–24.

Renewal charges will last for 29 months for TGSPDCL consumers

The total recovery from consumers in TGSPDCL would be ₹4222.93 crore over 29 months and ₹1197.3 crore from consumers in TGNPDCL limits over 26 months from November 2026.

The approved power sale for 2022-23 was 64,434.42 million units (MU) including 17,629.25 MU for agricultural pumping sets and for 2023-24 it was 74,442.36 MU including 25,154.04 MU for agricultural use. Discoms charged ₹798.87 crore more than the cost of supply from consumers during 2024-25 and this amount would be adjusted in the retail supply business annual revenue requirements for 2026-27, the current year.
