Tamil Nadu’s TASMAC Makes Digital Payments Mandatory for Liquor Purchases – Implementation Date | Cash to be stopped? | Today’s news

Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), the state-owned liquor retailer, will make digital payments mandatory for retail. alcohol purchases exceeding ₹1,000 from November 1, 2026 in an effort to improve transparency, strengthen financial accountability and address complaints of overcharging.

According to a senior TASMAC official quoting an official circular, the state currently operates 4,048 liquor retail outlets. According to the news agency, the official gave details of the new directive on Tuesday PTI.

The initiative follows repeated complaints from the public that customers are being charged more than the maximum retail price (MRP) printed on liquor bottles. The company expects digital transactions to improve sales tracking and ensure that revenue is deposited directly into its official bank accounts.

“While UPI, debit and credit card options are already available, the vast majority of transactions continue to be in cash,” PTI quoted the official.

He added: “The daily handling of large amounts of physical currency has created significant operational challenges for store staff, including security risks when transporting cash, account discrepancies and the risk of counterfeit money.”

We accept UPI, Debit and Credit Cards

Under the new rules, every single alcohol purchase worth more than ₹1000 through digital modes from November 1 onwards. Accepted payment methods include Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards and credit cards.

Cash payments will continue to be allowed for purchases ₹1,000 or less during the initial phase of implementation.

“Customers purchasing within these limit amounts will retain the option to pay by cash or digital means. To maintain strict control, TASMAC has strictly prohibited employees from accepting payments via personal QR codes or individual bank accounts,” he said.

The official said digital payments will allow real-time transactions to be recorded, including accurate time stamps and payment amounts. This is expected to improve sales traceability and help authorities identify discrepancies between liquor sold and revenue collected.

TASMAC also warned that employees who breach the new payment requirements will face strict disciplinary action.

The official said: “Store supervisors are instructed to issue physical receipts for every purchase and hand over bottles of alcohol only after verifying the transaction at official cash registers.”

Mandatory bulletin boards in alcohol stores

As part of the implementation plan, all TASMAC outlets will be required to post prominent 2 x 3 feet notice boards informing customers about the new payment rules.

The notices are to ensure that customers are aware of the requirement for digital payments before making a purchase.

The company has directed area managers to oversee preparations and ensure stores comply with the new guidelines.

They must also ensure adequate network connectivity so that digital transactions can be processed without interruption.

Weekly reviews will be conducted to monitor implementation and resolve operational issues arising during the transition.

Focus on transparency and revenue tracking

The mandate for digital payments is to strengthen oversight of liquor sales in Tamil Nadu by creating verifiable electronic records of transactions. Direct crediting of sales proceeds to official accounts is also expected to improve reconciliation and reduce scope for cash withdrawal irregularities.
