Supreme Court says person who converts from Hinduism to Islam cannot claim ‘back’ quota | Today’s news
The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a person’s social backwardness cannot be transferred from a Hindu social order to a non-Hindu social order after he converts to another religion.
Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar dismissed the Tamil Nadu government’s plea against the Madras High Court order which held that a person converting to Islam cannot claim reservation in the Backward Class (Muslim) category on the basis of conversion alone.
While upholding the apex court’s order quashing the Tamil Nadu government’s notification granting reservation to Muslim converts, the top court said it called for no interference.
On August 7, the apex court reserved its decision on the plea filed by the state government against the high court verdict.
In the state government’s appeal, it is stated that the challenged judgment raises fundamental questions regarding the permissible scope of interventions in the executive policy conceived according to the recommendations of the expert statutory commission.
