The Star Trek Finale: A Universe of Disappointment for Its Producers
When the curtain closed on the latest installment of the Star Trek franchise, fans of the beloved sci-fi series were left reeling. The finale, which had been eagerly anticipated by millions around the world, was met with widespread disdain from the very people who had brought it to life.
The first – and perhaps most shocking – issue at hand was the narrative, which many felt was convoluted and lacked a clear direction. "It’s as if they tried to cram every plot thread from the past six seasons into a 45-minute finale and then hoped for the best," said a disappointed Alex Kurtzman, showrunner of the series. "I’m still trying to figure out how it all fit together myself."
Adding to the sense of disarray was the handling of several key characters, with many fans feeling that their favorite characters were given short shrift in the finale’s climax. "I was really looking forward to a more satisfying conclusion for some of the supporting characters, only to have them brushed aside in favor of the main trio," lamented series co-creator Bryan Fuller, now regrettably known for his part in creating a finale that left fans in disarray.
Production was also rocked by a series of behind-the-scenes challenges that threatened to derail the whole production. "We had a number of key cast members falling ill, logjams in visual effects, and a last-minute change in the time slot," recalled executive producer Akiva Goldsman. "It was like trying to build a bridge with Jenga blocks while simultaneously wrestling with a lion."
Ultimately, the disappointment from both the producers and fans has led to a sense of disillusionment with the franchise as a whole. "It’s hard to imagine where we go from here," confessed Kurtzman, his voice laced with sadness. "Maybe we’ll just have to content ourselves with the knowledge that we made some good TV along the way."
The Star Trek finale may have left fans in a galaxy of sadness, but one thing is certain – the producers behind it will be left struggling to recover from the fallout.
