The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday (August 9, 2025) arrested seven Indian fishermen of Rameswaam for charging poaching in international waters.
According to sources, the mechanized ship owned by D. Irudhay Dickson with seven fishermen on board on Saturday morning released into the sea from Mola Rameswaam.
On the basis of accusations of the transition of the international naval border (IMBL), they were stopped by the Sri Navy patrol ship for questioning. Subsequently, they arrested seven fishermen who were identified as A. Dullas, 56, L. Silaidan, 26, J. Arul Robert, 53, S. Loilan, 45, K. Arockiya Sanrin, 20, A. Baskar, 45 and R. Jesu Rajan, 32, 32, 32, 32, 32, from Thangachimadam. Their ship was detained.
With this arrest, the number of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka navy has increased to 61 years after the period of ban on fishing in the Ramanathapuram district.
Congress condemns arrests
The President of Congress Tamil Nadu (TNCC) K. Selvaperunthagai condemned the arrest of fishermen in the middle of the sea.
In his statement, he remembered the recent incidents of such arrests Sri of Lankan Navy when fishermen hunted near the island of Katchatheeva. He claimed that the Sri Lanka navy was involved in attacking fishermen and holding their fishing vessels.
He said that, despite the state government, he urged the center to find a lasting solution to this problem, in this respect no meaningful steps were taken.
The center should immediately negotiate with the government of Sri Lanka and also facilitate conversations between fishermen on both sides to find a permanent solution and demand the safety of fishermen Tamil Nadu.
