Rishabh Pant was not thinking about Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) not playing to their potential in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Studded with some of the biggest names in world cricket, LSG have managed to win just two of their eight matches (prior to the MI vs LSG clash) and are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table.
LSG had good if not great results in their first two seasons and qualified for the play-offs in the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons. However, things took a different turn there as the Sanjiv Goenka-owned side finished seventh in 2024 and 2025. Pant admitted that LSG’s poor show affected Goenka – one of the passionate owners of the IPL.
“It’s been a tough season for us and there’s no running away from that, but the one person who’s had it the hardest is our owner, Mr. Goenka; he’s one of those guys. Everyone knows how passionate he is about cricket and his team,” Pant said after losing to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
The LSG skipper also vowed to give 200% from now on and do everything to put a smile on Goenka’s and the fans’ faces. “But at the same time we let our fans down. The only promise from this break is that we will give it 200%, try to get that luck back and hopefully we can definitely do that for our owner and the fans,” he added.
LSG come into this game after losing to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Super Over at home on March 26. With a week off, Pant said the break helped to regroup. “It definitely (did), a lot of reflection, what we can do and what we can do as a team and as individuals,” he said.
Rohit Sharma returns after five matches
Meanwhile, LSG were sent in to bat first after Mumbai Indians skipper Suryakumar Yadav won the toss. Suryakumar leads Mumbai Indians in place of regular skipper Hardik Pandya, who suffered back spasms, while Rohit Sharma is back as a batsman.
Corbin Bosch came in for Trent Boult for Mumbai Indians. Josh Inglis made his debut for LSG while Mukul Choudhary made way for debutant Akshat Raghuwanshi.
