Australia have backed captain Sophie Molineux to lead their Women’s World T20 campaign after the all-rounder was declared fit and included in a strong 15-man squad for the 2026 tournament in England, while pace bowler Darcie Brown was left out of one of the biggest pre-competition selections.
The six-time champions, who suffered a shock semi-final exit in the previous edition in 2024, will head into the tournament under a relatively new management group led by Molineux, with Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath named vice-captains.
Australia also handed out the first invitation to the ICC tournament left arm fast Lucy Hamilton as the selectors preferred a variety of pace options for the English conditions, which are expected to favor swing and seam movement over outright speed.
Molineux’s rise to the captaincy earlier this year came as a surprise to many given the injury setbacks that have repeatedly interrupted her career. The 28-year-old replaced the retired Alyssa Healy in January and has since been tasked with leading Australia into a transition phase while maintaining their dominance in global tournaments.
Questions have been raised about Molineux’s fitness ahead of the World Cup after she suffered a back injury ahead of Australia’s tour of the Caribbean. She featured only as a batsman during this series, raising concerns about whether she would be fit enough to play an all-rounder in the World Cup.
However, Australian national coach Shawn Flegler said management remained fully confident in Molineux’s fitness and leadership skills going into the tournament.
“Sophie has already established herself as captain and has built a strong bond with the group over the last few tours, so we look forward to seeing what this side can achieve under her leadership,” Flegler said after the team announcement.
The omission of Brown, one of the fastest bowlers in women’s cricket, was a major talking point when the squad was unveiled. Brown has been a regular feature of Australia’s white-ball plans in recent years, but the selectors ultimately opted for a more balanced attack suited to the expected conditions in England.
“Darcie Brown was unfortunate to drop out, but the decision was based on the conditions we expect and the composition of the team,” explained Flegler.
“With at least six right-arm pace options in the mix and an unexpected pace that will be less effective, we decided to go with Lucy Hamilton, who offers something different as a left-arm quick.
Hamilton’s inclusion gives Australia a left-arm seam option alongside an experienced bowling group with Megan Schutt, Kim Garth and Alana King.
The team also sees the return of all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Grace Harris, who both missed out on the West Indies tour earlier this year. Their return significantly strengthens Australia’s batting depth and all-round balance heading into the marquee event.
Veteran stars Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney continue to form the backbone of the team, while young talents like Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll add fresh energy to the batting unit.
Australia will play warm-up matches against South Africa Women’s National Cricket Team, England Women’s National Cricket Team and West Indies Women’s National Cricket Team before opening their campaign against South Africa at Old Trafford on June 13.
