Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill came under scrutiny after former India cricketer Virender Sehwag questioned his tactical decisions during GT’s five-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-scoring IPL clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB chased down a daunting target of 206 with balls to spare, exposing GT’s late innings bowling capabilities.
The defeat adds to GT’s recent woes after a heavy defeat to Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad, with Sehwag particularly singling out Gill’s decision-making in the death overs.
“When 22-25 runs were needed in the last three overs and if Mohammed Siraj had come in at that stage and got a wicket, it might have been 20 from two overs and who knows what would have happened from there. They could have at least finished the game. The match didn’t even go to the final,” said Sehzzwag on Cricbuzzwag. Captain Shubman Gill Under the Scanner (Screenshot from X)
DOES A BAD CHAPTER COST GT?
Sehwag also pointed to late changes in GT’s bowling, suggesting that Gill, who is also the captain of the Indian national side, missed an opportunity by not maximizing the turns of veteran pacer Mohammed Siraj, who had earlier bowled a strong opening spell. Instead, another bowler from Manav Suthar went for 15 runs, allowing RCB to remain firmly in control.
“I think the captain made a bit of a mistake there. OK, Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan got hit for runs, but the captain’s job is to bring them back into the attack. If you think you can’t use a bowler because he conceded 31 runs from two overs, then you’ve lost heart, haven’t you? That means you’ve given up,” he added.
Sehwag’s criticism reflects increasing scrutiny over GT’s tactical decisions at crunch time, especially in tight chases where over-leading the bowlers has proved costly. Despite having key wicket-taking options at his disposal, GT’s inability to effectively close down the middle and death overs has become a recurring problem this season.
In a 99-run defeat of MIGT conceded 73 runs in the final overs which eventually took the game out of GT’s hands. Against Rajasthan Royals, they managed to pull things back in the death overs, however, they raced to a big total already during the powerplay and middle over phase.
GT will now look to regroup quickly as they travel to Chennai to face Chennai Super Kings on April 26. Meanwhile, RCB will head to Delhi to face Delhi Capitals on April 27.
