Quote of the day: “Success is not a good teacher, failure makes you humble,” said Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
Renowned actor Shah Rukh Khan once spoke about the less discussed side of failure. He shared how life’s failure can be more valuable than success.
Shah Rukh Khan opened up about his thoughts on being successful as one of the most successful and richest Bollywood actors in India. He said the inspirational line during his first TED Talk, “Thoughts on Humanity, Fame and Love” in April 2017.
In 17 minutes, Khan reflected on fame, failures and personal growth.
What does this mean
With his statement, he challenged the long-held belief that success is the ultimate goal of life. Instead, he suggested that it can sometimes create a false sense of confidence and is therefore sometimes not appropriate. When things go right, people often stop challenging themselves or pushing boundaries, further limiting their growth and success.
King Khan believes that failure is much better when it comes to life lessons. He says it as he meant it, that defeat forces an individual to introspect, which ultimately pushes for improvement. In the same sense, failures can help to get rid of the ego, making people more aware of their limitations that they can work on. For someone like Shah Rukh Khan, who has experienced ups and downs in both his personal and professional worlds, failure has become a core strength that has built resilience and perspective.
What Shah Rukh Khan said
Actor King also said at the talk, “I sell dreams and I sell love to millions of people back home in India who think I’m the best lover in the world. If you don’t tell anyone, I’ll tell you I’m not, but I’ll never let that assumption go.”
Looking back on his career, he said: “I was born in a refugee colony in the capital of India, New Delhi. And my father was a freedom fighter. My mother was, well, just a warrior of mothers. And like the original homo sapiens, we fought for survival. I lost both my parents when I was in my early 20s, which I have to admit, now I remember my father died, but I remember that night when I was careless. the neighbor who drove us to the hospital mumbled something about “dead people don’t tip that well” and walked off into the darkness.
“And then I was only 14 years old and I put my father’s dead body in the back seat of the car and started walking back from the hospital to the house except for me. And in the middle of her silent crying, my mother looked at me and said, “Son, when did you learn to drive?” And I thought about it, and I realized, and I said to my mother, “Right now, mom.”
Shah Rukh Khan will next be seen in the upcoming film, King opposite Deepika Padukone and Suhana Khan.
