Union Home Minister Amit Shah met US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore at his residence in Delhi on Thursday (June 18, 2026). The discussion focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

Mr Gore is the third US ambassador to meet Mr Shah since he first took over as interior secretary in 2019. He previously met with US Ambassador Kenneth Juster in 2019 and Ambassador Eric Garcetti in 2023.

The meeting assumes significance as Mr Shah rarely meets foreign delegates and ministers and comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump in France during the G7 summit.

Mr. Shah last visited a foreign country in 2006 when he led a delegation to Germany as the Home Minister of Gujarat.

In a post on X, Mr Shah said: “He met the US Ambassador to India, Mr Sergio Gore, in New Delhi today. He discussed in detail the further strengthening of India-US security cooperation, particularly in the fight against terrorism and narcotics.”

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India is firmly committed to advancing the comprehensive India-US Global Strategic Partnership and ensuring that the people of both nations benefit from the bilateral relationship,” he added.

Mr Gore was the first to announce the meeting at X. “I had an excellent meeting with the Honorable Home Secretary @AmitShah. We had a fruitful discussion on strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism, protecting our people from narcotics and illegal drugs, securing our borders and jointly bringing criminals to justice in both countries,” he wrote.

This was followed by Mr. Šáh’s contribution.

Hours before he met Mr Shah in Delhi, Mr Gor met US President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in France. “Back in Delhi after a great trip to the G7 in France. Lots of positives between the US and India!” said on X.

Earlier on June 2, Mr. Shah met a Nepali delegation led by Rabi Lamichhan, president of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party. In November 2022, he held bilateral meetings with the ministers of Nigeria and Ethiopia on the sidelines of the No Money for Terror conference held in the suburbs of Delhi.
