
The man who presented himself as a potential groom on Shaadi.com was arrested by the wing of the cyber crime of the Municipal Police in Hyderabad for buried the doctor of almost 11 lakh and threatened her blackmail.
The official release of the police in the field of cyber crimes said that the accused, identified as Jogada Vamshi Krishna, allegedly created a fake profile called “Harsha Cherkuri” on the platform and used his premium service “Select Shaadi” to target the victim.
“After gaining his confidence with the promises of marriage, he claimed that financial difficulties and forced it to broadcast large amounts. Later he resorted to threats and blackmailing with personal material. He was arrested on March 15,” according to a police press release.
The investigation revealed that Krishna has more than 20 cases in the history of similar fraud, with more than 20 cases filed against it, pointing to a wider formula of digital exploitation through unverified online profiles.
The release also explained that despite the offer of paid “verified” profiles, the platform allegedly did not carry out any real identity checks, said the officer.
“The head of the relationship shared a fake fraudulent profile with a victim without verification in the background. Head officials at Shaadi.com, including the director of Anupam Mittal, team leader and manager Satisha, were also appointed to allow the transfer of false data and implementing any steps, even though they received a complaint.”
According to the rules of information technologies (intermediary instructions and code of digital media ethics), 2021, platforms such as Shaadi.com are obliged to verify the users, to act immediately according to complaints and make appropriate security mechanisms. Police Hyderabad said that the negligence of the platform deprived it of its protection of the “safe port” under section 79 IT law, which, according to Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhit and other cyber laws, is criminally responsible.
A case was registered where multiple parts of BNS and IT were involved, including sections 66c and 66d of them.
Citizens are recommended not to rely blindly on “verified” badges on marital or dating platforms, avoid sharing private content online, and reporting any suspicious activity by dialing the 1930 cyber line or visiting computer crime.gov.in.
