A portion of a building under construction at a waste-to-energy plant in Moshi in Pune district collapsed on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) afternoon, trapping 16 workers. Seven of them were rescued and efforts are on to bring out the other nine workers.
The structure, developed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation under a public-private partnership model, collapsed after a huge pile of old waste accumulated in the premises broke loose during heavy rain and hit the building, said Corporation Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi.
Rescuers, including disaster management units and local police and senior municipal officials, rushed to the scene. Ambulances were deployed. A municipality spokesman said rescue teams used equipment to lift concrete slabs and steel beams, even as family members of the workers gathered at the scene.
In a separate incident, the safety railing of a bridge about 500 meters away from the collapsed structure was damaged and one of its slabs was displaced. The bridge over the local waterway is passable. Authorities have not determined a connection between the two incidents and said each case is being investigated separately.
