The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken “serious” cognizance of the alleged gang-rape and trafficking of a minor girl in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar and directed the district magistrate and the district superintendent of police to submit a comprehensive action-taken report within 15 days.

The commission said such an incident was a reflection of administrative lapses, deficiencies in police checks and inadequate monitoring mechanisms that allowed such criminal activity to continue and sought action against illegal hotels.

According to a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the local police, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly held captive and gang-raped by more than 30 men over a period of five days. The brutal ordeal took place in several local hotels in the district. The police launched a swift crackdown and arrested a number of hotel owners and managers directly linked to the case. The revelation of the crime sparked widespread outrage and protests across the district.

The NCW is holding a hearing

On Wednesday (July 8, 2026), the NCW conducted a hearing on the matter in which Amit Yadav, District Magistrate; Harishankar, Superintendent of Police; Deepak Kumar, Head of Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Additional Superintendent of Police; and Jogendra Kaushik, Chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of Children (CWC), according to an official statement by the commission.

During the hearing, NCW Chairman Vijaya Rahatkar expressed deep concern over the malpractices and directed the district magistrate to identify and take strict enforcement action against all unregistered and unauthorized hotels and establishments operating in the district within 15 days.

The Inspector General of Police was also ordered to carry out an accountability review into the failure of local police mechanisms, including patrol and monitoring systems, which failed to detect human trafficking and repeated sexual abuse of minors.

The commission also took serious notice of the delay in bringing the victim before the Child Protection Committee, which amounted to a violation of statutory provisions.
