Senate Advances Confirmation of Trump’s Energy Secretary Nominee
Washington D.C. – The Senate has taken a significant step towards confirming President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Energy Secretary, Rick Perry, to the final vote. On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources voted 19-3 to advance Perry’s nomination to the full Senate.
Perry, a former Texas governor and 2012 presidential candidate, has been criticized by some environmental groups and lawmakers over his lack of experience in the energy sector and his views on climate change. However, many Republicans have voiced their support for Perry, citing his business acumen and track record of promoting energy production during his time in Texas.
"Rick Perry has a proven record of creating jobs and growing the economy, and I believe he would be a great addition to the Trump administration," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). "I expect him to do a fantastic job as Energy Secretary."
Perry’s nomination was met with some opposition from Democratic lawmakers, who have expressed concerns over his support for fossil fuels and his perceived lack of understanding of climate change. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) criticized Perry’s stance on climate change, saying, "Rick Perry’s views on climate change are simply out of step with the scientific consensus and with the American people."
Despite the opposition, many Republicans are confident that Perry’s nomination will sail through the final confirmation vote. "I expect a strong showing of support from my colleagues in the Senate, and I am confident that Mr. Perry will be confirmed as the next Secretary of Energy," said Senator John Barrasso (R-WY).
Perry’s confirmation would mark the latest in a series of confirmations for Trump’s cabinet, which has seen a number of high-profile picks approved by the Senate. Earlier this week, the Senate confirmed Trump’s nomination for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, as well as his nominee for Secretary of Defense, James Mattis.
The full Senate is expected to vote on Perry’s nomination early next week, with many Republicans predicting a decisive victory for Trump’s pick.
