Employees of all four corporations of state road transport (RTC) in Karnataka announced that they will go on an indefinite strike from 5 August and stop bus services around the state. The Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions announced the announcement and quoted the government continued to neglect their long -term requirements.
In a letter to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the trade unions criticized the government for ignoring the complaints of traffic workers, including the release of waiting arrears, inspection of salaries and timely promotions. “Despite repeated requirements for strikes, the government only organizes meetings and promises resolution in a few days or months, but nothing will change,” said HV Ananth Subbarao, President of KSRTC employees and workers’ Federation.
Their key requirements have sought to increase various contributions to employees, improved healthcare facilities and regularization of drivers and technical workers currently hired on the basis of a contractual basis. They also insisted that only permanent drivers were deployed by corporations for electric buses, not contractual employees.
The heads of the trade unions argued that transport workers played a crucial role in the implementation of social care programs, such as “Shakti scheme”, which generated good will and income to the government. “Despite our contribution, the government completely ignored us,” Subbarao said.
